View Full Version : 4.13 Requests?

So ... hot on the heels of releasing 4.12, we're ready to begin the 4.13 beta series. The two major features that will be introduced are BitTorrent and a DHT. The BitTorrent support is simple to explain: LimeWire will be able to download and share files using the BT protocol. It's going to be integrated seamlessly so that a BT download will look nearly identical to a Gnutella download. The DHT support is a bit more behind-the-scenes. There's nothing obvious about it that will immediately be useful, but what it will do is enable certain features like requerying of failed downloads, or a buddy list, or nearly anything else that requires access to specific resource.
So, those are the two main things. But there's lots of other stuff that can be added. What do do you want to see in LimeWire 4.13?

Extended keyword filter:
filtering in the name, artist, title, album, vendor fields, with flags to mark what fields we want to filter.
Substring filter to filter out a substring with substitution characters substituting all or one character ( for example %, \%, _, \_, \\ ) in any position.
To retain the sort assignment made in library/incomplete files moving between library and search, independently what action happened (new search, cancel download, etc).
Downloads:
An additional Cancel+Delete incomplete file menu item and button.
Remove the Clear (All) Inactive menu item and button - it is too dangerous. We can use selectively the Cancel/Clear menu item and button.
A corrected junk filter - see my previous messages.
A junk filter viewer to see what is in effect.
Some safety measures to be able to restore LW settings, downloads(dat), junk filters because we can lose these at a LW/system crash. For example make backup copy at LW start and another 3 in cycle in every hour when LW is in repose from this aspect.

Please could it be made absolutely impossible to delete completed files from the Limewire Library. Making them go to the recycle bin/ Trash would be acceptable.

How about a separate search category for podcasts?
It'd be nice to be able to subscribe to their RSS feeds from Limewire (is it possible already? am I missing something?) and not have to use ITunes to do it.

Search Results
-same name files get a yellow checkmark. Only identical files, regardless of name, get the green check.
-results in all tabs get updated when a file is downloading/completed. Currently only about 1/3 of 200 downloads show updated results in a What's New" image search results.
--a flag for "previously download and deleted" (recorded in a blocklist, which could be exchanged with other users?). Currently "What's New" and "Browse Host" results necessarily bypass the junk filter, which unfortunately means the same spam in "What's new?" gets downloaded multiple times.
--add an Image "preview" column . Allow the icon column to display 80 x 80 icons of images, video previews or the "Album Art" for music files (perhaps a preview of the file could be sent with the TT hash?). Flickr is good example :)
Downloading
-client-side queuing https://www.limewire.org/jira/browse/CORE-21 . So that more than 3 files can be downloaded when browsing a single host without hammering the host and risking the "banned greedy client."
Magnet links
--formatted for LANS (using the forced external IP; formatting with the internal IP is useless).
--be more effective. The magnet at Jens' http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html is a good test case.
Uploads
--prefer uploads of unique files over PFS, swarmed or popular uploads
--change allocation of upload bandwidth so that 40 slow modem uploads can coexist with a few fast T3's.
--collapse display of multiple uploads of the same file, but still allow browsing/inspection of each upload
--sort uploads so "queued (10)" correctly sorts after "queued (9)"
--show upload stats in the Monitor pane's status bar, much like the way shared file stats are shown in the downloads Pane.
--put the throttle on the Monitor page, so I can preference a friend's upload without interrupting or killing uploads to others. ;)
Library
--allow files in an UNshared Library folder to be moved to the Shared folder so that alt locs and hashes are preserved. (Such as when a large video is inspected after downloading to the unshared folder, and found suitable for sharing).
--periodical refreshing of locations during slow times in a session. Call this "seeding"?
System
Get Apple and LimeWire to find and fix that dratted vMem bug! :D

There's nothing obvious about it that will immediately be usefulExcept - magnet links will work! LimeWire will have the ability to search by hash. These are cool end-user features the DHT enables.
Sam

They won't work immediately, which is more what I was implying. Eventually it will allow all those features (and the ones I already listed).

Hello Sam,
thanks for this posting.
You want to built in a torrent download and a DHT,
Hope, you can add torrent soon, to waste not a lot of time coding this.
Other multis like opera, getright and Shareaza still need a lot of time for that.
Is there an open java torrent to add, so that we can save time for the DHT ?
EDIT: Azurreus !!!!!*Ü**
I appreciate to have a DHT in Limewire.
Please, is it possible to use the emule kademlia part in java to have this DHT in limewire please? Please do not use the code part of azureus, which has a DHT as well, but I want to use the DHT to download from emule.
Is this possible to organize the emule protocol over the new DHT in limewire?
see here the links for a java implementation of "javakad-emule", this project is as well just registered as sf.net.
back again
we can make p2p in pure java without c++ is the emule kademlia nework is availabel in java

so you could use the java code for the emule-DHT kademlia, the java code of azureus for the DHT or the java code of the DHT of YACY.net, the p2p search engine.
This search engine would allow as well to handle buddies, as there is already a message function in it. You got that message and have as well read the forums.
However technically done:
- Why is limewire and azureus not making a common client? Work together an the same code basis and both band it in their name. Get the pipes together and then everyone can add their features, if there is a feature, that the one partner does not want, you can leave it or just snip it in the code. But why not once making a common basis to have a limewire azureus hybrid common thing ? get in contact with paul et al.
- YACY.net has DHT, which is useful as well, first to integrate a DHT for messaging, the code is already in, and as well to add a search engine like google to limewire, which is indexing the web. therefore you need a browser tab in limewire. I think you should make here nor cooperation with yacy, but take the open code and decelop it... then after a while you can update and see how both search engines stay compatible. Yacy is open !!!
As well the buddy function would be good to see in limewire.
- the last DHT as a java code of the emule kadmlia part is my favourite. I want to see limewire downloading from emule / ed2k network. Emule coders want to imrove the kademlia part of it and speak of kad 2,0 version. Maybe you wait for this, but I think sooo different it cannot be, so take the existing kademli and start coding right now.
I suggested to azureus as well to to the same, Here it is again a question to make a joint-venture as they want to integrate as well a new, second DHT.
There was a release of Azureus to make a DHT called ONHOLLYWOOD, which is a content dht, for this DTH as well a hashing scheme is needed, which is - if there were cluefull, a ED2K hash. so.. if this is in azureus, then they should as well connect to the ed2k network with that kademlia DHT of emule in java.
Ask Paul et al, again to join this development and make a Kademlia connection in java as well for azureus and as well for limewire.
Really, I would like to see limewire downloading from the kad net of emule.
Can you implement this ? and how long would this take ?
The buddylist function for a DHT would be nice, but only, it it is really a buddy list , which finds the buddy after an online session and with a new dynamic ip again.
we don´t need emule we don´t need azureus
we need a "lime-azureus-wire" which connects to
- limewiregnutella
- azureustorrent
- kadmelia of emule.
this three things would be better than shareaza with g2 in the middle.
and the code is already there (except javakad-emule), so you just need more a cooperation of coding,
And I agree, that azureus needs limewire as well integrated,... so maker a common platform and develop the kademlia part in emule as a joint venture,.
To bring G1 back ON TOP to the shareazaapproach in modern version (gnutella torrent kad) we need a joint venture of azureus and limewire,
for getting rid of the copyright theft image we then should integrate the yacy.net p2p search engine with java browsertab and messenger function with a gui like a buddylist...
thanks

We aren't interested in adding any other network protocols into LimeWire right now. We don't really consider BT a different network because it is just a protocol for file-transfer. Gnutella is the peer protocol LimeWire uses and will use in the foreseeable future. We have been developing our DHT for many months. I do not think it is compatible with the emule DHT. There is very little interest on our part in being a hybrid client.
thommi
June 27th, 2006, 09:47 PM
thanks for the quick reply.
ok, i see, though i technically regard BT as a network, you have a protocol and search peers and download parts from them... nothing else does kad in emule.
Do you really think, emule is not a hybrid client? Took a long journey the users and even developers understand this. So limewire with torrent is already a hybrid.
I don´t know why then not downloading from ed2k-kademlia.
Ok this is you decision and you said maybe later. Has Greg as well no interest in kademlia downloads ?
See shareara, see trustyfiles, see morpheus, see gnucleus, they all added networks and added VALUE to gnutella1. In this perspective I argue.
Are you sure, that azureus does not want a kademlia a download?
I think for the torrent side you take code from them ? why not then speakign about a perfect match with them for kad-download in lime and azureus...
and tell me, why you personally don´t have the interest in, too much work? to diffucult ? philosophy ? history to fight g1 not only against g2 but as well against ed2k?
Limewire is good, but beaten as well, I tested for a few days limewire again.
you can download, but new media is in emule.. it is so... limewire regarded as a hybrid would make the last bridge g1 and torrent / kad.
maybe one day we can download kad-stuff in lime...
and what about adding buddies alliancep2p.net e.g. or the messenger function of yacy.net ? or really a serious downloading/searching format, the p2p search engine !!! so google in limewire...

Adding support for ed2k:// links, not Kad, might be a good idea, though.
thommi
June 27th, 2006, 10:56 PM
you mean only hashing in ed2k style to get the links handled.
well, ok one start!
can you promise that as you are from the staff ?
but why then not downloading from that kad network too ? you have dht.
well.. antsp2p has the code for hashing in ed2k, use that.
i will give you an example: search ares, limewire and emule for the three keyword phrase: " blue isle lagoon " and tell me the results, where to find how many results.. I am waiting for your answer !!

emule uses a different hash than Gnutella. ed2k links aren't really possible in a Gnutella program without major work to support a new hash format.

Yes, Free Peers had started working on ed2K links but let it drop.
Is there going to be a simple way to import IP and hash filters?
The easiest way to use and manage it would be to have LimeWire detect and
load up distinct files for each type of filter, thereby making it possible to
distribute and use them without getting bogged down in listboxes and such.
For example, it would only take about 5000 lines in a hash filter to virtually
wipe out all worms and spam from shares and searches in one stroke. With a
functioning hash filter an effective IP filter could be quite small, but one should
make it possible to put in 256K rules just to be sure the ceiling is high enough.
Naturally, the sizes of these files make it wise to handle them separately.

downloading from ed2k-kademlia.
in kademlia downloads ?
Are you sure, that azureus does not want a kademlia a download?
I think there's a slight misunderstanding what a DHT is, what it does and for what it is used. Speaking in terms of file sharing you're using it to retrieve information about people who have a certain file and in the second step you're using the known protocols like Gnutella, BT etc. to download the actual file. This requires that the person on the other end is running the same client/protocol of course...
In our case the information can be literally anything as long as it doesn't exceed a certain size limit. I don't know the exact limit yet but we're maybe talking about 1KB (enough to smuggle information out of China, a compressed version of Shake*****e's Hamlet is IIRC ~4KB).

I cannot believe, that mojito is not connecting to azureus dht to get the download sources as well. Both are limewire and both are open.
This is a big mistake to ignore the sources of azureus, to search for magnet bith in both networks: limewire torrent and azureus torrent.
My request is, to have downloads from emules kademlia in limewire.
You can use any DHT for that you like, it must only be able to search and download from the kedamlia network of emule.
Besides that all, next to torrent the new DHT makes technical improvements possible, but i would not invest in nitty gritty, but instead of in a new feature: A dht with a buddylist. herefore it would be cool to have it really p2p, later then we could add JETI.Jabberstudio.org to have AOL MSN YAHOO OCQ serverconnected buddies as well in the list.
so don´t miss the option to have torrents DHT with azureus.
Don´t miss the option to have your DHT downloading friom kademlia.
DHT is the main basi for a buddylist.
So ... I see these own solutions as a big mistake, Why fightin azureus and builing an own network instead of joining the trackerless DHT network, WHY A SECOND ONE ??? This does not help filesharing and joining /swarming sources. Gnutelliums had this philosophie, for the torrent community there is a big braek done in this philosphy,
Liemwire is not limewire nowerdays. Open, but own.
This is not open, if it is too specialized, so that no one is compatible.

At one point in time we were considering implementing support for the BS and gtkg hostiles and blacklist files. It may make sense to do so now albeight something tells me the BS list is no longer maintained :(That something lied: [BearShare fullsize hostiles list] (http://www.technutopia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=240).
The short list internal to BearShare has many of my contributions, and I went on
to compile comprehensive lists on my own. This has been going on for a while
now. Adding a hash list would allow me to shrink my IP list by at least a factor
of ten, possibly bringing it within reach of LimeWire if it's code is streamlined.

A junk filter viewer to see what is in effect.
Some safety measures to be able to restore LW settings, downloads(dat), junk filters because we can lose these at a LW/system crash. For example make backup copy at LW start and another 3 in cycle in every hour when LW is in repose from this aspect.Someone has already created a downloads.dat backup system for macosx. It would be good if a similar system was created for windows since the corruption of this file is so much more common & happens so easily. The osx version seems to work fine in Tiger. LimeWireBackUp (http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=56080)
The problem with deleting LW prefs folder is we lose all junk settings. It would be handy if we could somehow save/retain these after deleting the LW prefs. Viewing what we have would also be very handy.
* How about a size filter? Not for the purpose of filtering junk, etc. which has been much discussed, but for the purpose of finding the size range of what you're looking for. Some other gnutella apps use size filters also. It seems like a logical step.

thommi
July 1st, 2006, 06:35 PM
ok, that seems it will be in in version 13.
I want to ask, if it is possible to have a spin.of of this dht p2p buddylist, which means, to have a buddylist only distrbuted exe without any filesharing.
So I want to request an extra installer at download.com only for this buddylist over the mojito DHT
This buddylist could be named mojito-p2p!!!
MO = I
to = towards
to = You
I to you = Mo jito u
;-)
Then this list could be and standalone installer.
Furthermore it would be nice, if this installer is bundled or hybird with the dht of yacy.net to distribut p2p searches and the database of the google combatant p2p search yacy... think about this option to make a spin of for the buddylist, which then is a limewire´s Product (Limewire´s Mojito p2p Messenger) and for later development capable to support a limewire yacy p2p search engine routing for the database and search engines...
Thanks

I'm not sure how the hashing works but ... these fake file results which are http linked, ... can these be attempted to be automatically filtered out so there's less fake results floating around in people's search results. ? ;) Can LW possibly detect the http/url link? No normal file would have this type of link. The only exceptions were radio station sponsored files.
Edit: Can you possibly extend the offerings of skins for LW on the skins support page. And possibly give link(s) to others. Be it here or GForums. I can give links if necessary. Perhaps a page as is with those skins that are qualified by LW.org & others that are at the user's risk (other multiple pages of links to skins or a unlimited page size of such.) for songs - there should be an option to preview songs in the limewire media player, but launch songs in the computer's default audio player without having to go into options every time
also, maybe you could put gracenote info for each song if a search also finds a listing in the gracenote db
batch editing of ID3 tags would be nice

Yes, Limewire is my favorite sharing utility, but it needs protocol encryption. For example, I can't use Limewire in private networks, because router trashes all Limewire protocol packets. Protocol encryption is a must for sharing applications, and I know many users need protocol encryption even they don't have any ideas about it. Thank you.

Hello Sam and Team, one question
thanks for implementing torrent. the last beta is three months ago and limewire is in danger because of the accusations of the industry.
Emule is the same and is not. Emule has as well an open content link directory, limewire has as well with magnetmix. So the location of the company or developers could not be the reason.
Furthermore a lot of apps like grogster or imesh or bearshare went to a payed drm download. Others like bottorrent or azureus prepared tzhemselves to become a media portal to download open or drm-media over the protocol.
What are limewire´s next constitution?
Well I want to suggest a good basis to work on and to have a justification from the p2p philosophy.
Would it be possible to implement the p2p search engine www.yacy.net ?
it is as well written in opensource java and limeire cold add it to become a web indexer and search engine over files and websites.
So... this woudl offer a total new identity withou loosing the old one, but getting rid of the accusations. As well new investors would be attrackted.
Can you bing uot such a hybrid limewire with the current yacy code added under one gui ? IMHO limewire just nees a webbrowser tab to display the admin console of yacy.
Read the wikipedia about the disrupted european search engine QUAERO and the new wikipedia /wikia.com interest to build a google like saearch engine, google for wikiasaria or wikisari .
Then you see to fight google with a p2p search engine inside of limewire would be a big plus fo you apllication and company.
So.. what are the schedules for the next beta relase and will limewire come out with torrent soon ?
What about a happy new year release of the 13 beta and then in later 2007 a release of the yacy p2p engine?
Please see as well the search-l Mailinglist of wiki.com to contcat Jim from wikia. He is searching for coders to develop a p2p search engine,
we could use yacy code.
Limewire could do this coding for wikia.com, just get in touch with jim or reply to the search-l , i post a copy of this to it.
Would this be an option to collaborate with wikia and wikipedia ?
Then release 13 as the last fielsharing release and then in summer 2007 we get limwire with yacy out in colaboration and branding witk wikipedia.
Thanks

A new breed of intrusions; "As there is no central server and the YaCy network is open to anyone, malicious peers are (theoretically) able to insert inaccurate or commercially biased search results. Also, at present, YaCy returns on the average significantly less results and is much slower than large commercial search engines." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yacy (fyi I'm not a part of the LW team, just a forum member)

this maybe throretically true. but it is woked oin it, e.g. with human ranking (this is what wiki earch wants) over the yacy toolbar and the amount of nodes exaggerated the last months. Limewire has as well malicius files, so some nodes try to index only their favourite websites, this is no problem, as in google any users can insert his pages as well for indexing.
I would like you to try yacy as a node and not just reading wikipedia, just try it to get the fire...

I would like to see the Junk filter working again similar to how it did soon after it was originally introduced. It is next to useless now. It considers many good files as junk & vice versa. And training it even over a lengthy period doesn't seem to improve it dramatically. I am using LW 4.13.8 (about to update to 4.13.9).
I had previously kept my junk results hidden, but it is far too risky to do that now. I was trying to verify complaints on the gnutella forums that the new betas were giving less search results. I found the same thing. I now have junk filter turned just mm away from zero, & am now getting better results. But arguably still not quite as good results as I should be getting for types of items that would normally with previous versions.
As had happened with the browse & chat options, perhaps along the way of re-coding LW, the efficiency of the Junk filter (& perhaps search efficiency) has fallen away due to not properly re-coding or translating or simply doesn't work well as is with the re-coded works as a whole. (Or perhaps with the introduction of the padlock.) But whatever the reason, something seems to be amiss. And it seems to be with both the windows & mac versions.
I'd like to see:
1. Junk filter improved.
2. Chat with host improved.
3. Browse host improved.
4. Search function improved.
5. Sharing files detection ability introduced. Gnutella or LW seems to be one of the few p2p sharing networks that doesn't allow knowing if other person is sharing. As a result, "too many people" are mistakenly using browse host as the tool 'god' to determine if someone else is sharing files or come to that conclusion after they get zero results. *Obviously this is not good & chances are people's ip's are being banned when they are in fact sharing.
Other issues:
6. Java Connection Issues. It seems some people in recent month or 2 have been having problems connecting due to specific Java they used. The best one seems to be Java 1.5_11. This issue has particularly affected Pro users but not only them. And I'm not so sure it's necessarily tied in with UPnP.
7. Personal issue: Ultrapeer Mode tends to knock out my router, also slows down my computer dramatically ... difficult to browse internet at same time also. Not too many incompletes or shares at moment. OSX & 1.5 GB ram, 22 GB spare space on System drive. Is the issue at my end or the program?
(just updated to 4.13.10 ... will see if any improvements ... though nothing in Feature History page that this may happen ... server ... will that improve UP mode? I like the increase in file size sharing.)

The junk filter hasn't changed at all really since it's introduction. It probably just has a larger corpus of what it considers junk, due to more training, and is being a bit overzealous.

LOTR, have you tried to forget the training data from the options? That should start the filter with a clean slate.

Unfortunately I can't find the possibility to fully disable the junk filter. I would like an option to
- disable the the junk/not junk button and menu item
- disable data collection in spam.dat file
- disable any other activity related to junk handling
