View Full Version : LimeWire Bugs

The beta version of LimeWire currently has three different bugs:
Bug #1: LimeWire remains at one connection light or doesn't have any connection lights, although it has full internet and server permissions.
Bug #2: LimeWire does not fully close. The process limewire.exe is visible and even if it is forced to close, nothing happens. Sometimes it says the process cannot be closed. When LimeWire is reopened, another process with the same name appears and it also will refuse to disappear.
Bug #3: LimeWire takes several minutes to close or won't close at all. The box "Please Wait while LimeWire shuts down..." will appear and will remain there.
Btw, I have tried various methods on trying to make LW work on my system, including removing the gnutella.net file and completely removing LW from my system. This means this is a LW bug, not a Vista bug.
System Information:
OS version: Windows Vista Home Premium
Firewall: ZoneAlarm (free version)
RAM: 3062 MB
Available HD Space: 182.99 GB
Connection Type: DSL
Router Brand Name: Westell 802.11g Wireless USB Adapter
Trying to connect from: House
LimeWire Version: 4.16.2
Java Version: 1.6.0_03
ISP: Verizon
Browser Test Results: Passed
Connection Details: My parent's PC has the DSL box. My PC uses a router, and my brother's is directly connected to the
DSL line.
First try at LimeWire: No. This problem has never occured before.
Saw Brick Wall in front of blue world icon: Yes
Security Programs: Ad-Aware 2007, Windows Defender, ZoneAlarm (the free version), AVG Free
Country: United States
This problem has been solved. I found out what the problem was. If you cannot connect and you use ZoneAlarm, click the support link in my sig.

Yes. We need this info:
1. OS/Type of Vista (eg home premium or ultimate)
2. Java.
3. Firewall/router model.

Recommended actions:
Download the LimeWire 4.17.0 beta. It's got new fixes which might solve the problem
Have you changed ISPs recently?
Try uninstalling ZoneAlarm.
Try downloading the gnutella.net file Kath posted somewhere.
Go to PortForward.com (http://www.portforward.com/) and look for your router make and model to see if there's a firewall on it.
Report back after you've tried that.

I have not recently changed ISPS. I don't need to uninstall ZoneAlarm and reinstall it because I have already removed and put back LimeWire's permissions to access the internet and server. On top of that, I have started LW without a firewall with no luck at all. On PortForward.com, I could not find if it had a firewall or not. The router model is Westell Versalink327W if you want to try and find it. As for the gnutella.net file, why would I have to download a new one if I completely removed LW from my PC and reinstalled it with the beta version?

Try this if you haven't done it yet: Port Forwarding LimeWire for the Westell Versalink 327W (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Westell/Versalink327W/Limewire.htm)
Also right-click on LimeWire or the icon you use to launch it, go to Properties and
set it to run in XP compatibility mode and as an administrator.

I cannot change the port in LimeWire. It freezes up and I have to force it to quit.
I changed it to XP compatibility and to run it as an admin. However, it still won't connect and it changed my color scheme to Windows Vista Basic.

The color scheme change should only apply when LimeWire is running.
When LimeWire is not running you can edit limewire.props in your personal LimeWire
settings folder to use any port you want. The variables involved are FORCED_PORT
on line 25 and PORT on line 42.
Try uninstalling Zonealarm as suggested, to see if it is interfering. If LimeWire
starts working again then there are other firewalls available which work better and
are also free. Zonealarm has always had problems with high performance software
like LimerWire and it appears they cannot fix it.

ZoneAlarm was indeed the problem. But it doesn't make sense. The old version of LimeWire worked with ZoneAlarm. The NEW version does not.

Zonealarm has always been a mess and it just keeps getting worse instead of better
because they just cannot resist piling more and more code onto it to fix bugs
instead of going back to where they went wrong in the first place and starting over
from there.
It doesn't help that their software has gotten a well-deserved notoriety for secretly
sending usage data back home and not letting you block that apparent spying.

I am downloading ZoneAlarm now. I have LimeWire open with a full connection, so when I use ZoneAlarm, maybe for some unknown reason it will work with ZoneAlarm.

Good news. I fixed the problem which prevented ZoneAlarm from allowing LimeWire to access the internet. I posted the instructions for future reference:
#1: Open ZoneAlarm by clicking on its icon in the system tray.
#2: Click the tab that says Firewall.
#3: Click the button that says Advanced.
#4: Make sure ALL of the following boxs are checked:
-Allow Outgoing DNS/DHCP in Trusted Zone on High Setting
-Allow Outgoing DNS/DHCP in Internet Zone on High Setting
At this point, you may get a message that says something was blocked. Click ok. At that point, LimeWire fully connected!
I am so glad I thought of that. Ty everybody for your help!

Believe me, you are not the only one with the same problems! I have the identical problems, but with the current version instead.
Symptoms:
(can't exit, even with task manager help)
(LW won't connect, stuck on 'internationalization settings')
(etc.)
I tried all the recommended fixes and near misses, along with emails to LW support. Nothing has worked. (LW works fine on my XP; it is connected to the same network, and has ZoneAlarm installed).
I will try uninstalling ZoneAlarm tonight and let you know the outcome.
Thanks for letting me and others in the same shape know that they are not alone.

Did you try what I did? Click on the link in my signature and follow the instructions there and see if that helps.
Oh, if that does not work, try disconnecting and reconnecting within LimeWire. It might take a few minutes.

Actually, I had just enough free time to discover that ZoneAlarm was the problem, not Microsoft Vista or Limewire. I will try your suggestions as soon as possible.
Since the discovery, I visited ZoneAlarm's forum. There are threads there that address the situation. Simply enter 'Limewire' in their search box.
There will be a thread that links to the ZoneAlarm user manual. In the manual are instructions for giving Internet 'server access' to P2P programs. Limewire is specifically mentioned in the manual. Search for "Limewire" to see the reference.
The ZoneAlarm user manual, along with your suggestions, should allow full access for LW. There are several people that replied to ZA's thread and said they now had full power and control while using LW.
Again, I will post my findings after implementation and testing.
Thanks again.

Np. I downloaded the manual and will keep it for future reference in case I need it. ;)
