View Full Version : LimeWire 5 Beta

We've just released the first LimeWire 5 beta. You can check it out at http://www.limewire.com/download/betaversion.php .
If you've tried the earlier alphas, you'll know it's a pretty big change from earlier versions of LimeWire. For those who haven't tried it... The first thing you'll notice is we rewrote the entire interface from scratch. You'll also noticed that we've included support for Jabber (XMPP). This means that LimeWire can sign-on to your favorite Jabber service and it will detect other friends of yours that are also signed on. You can share files directly with your friends. When you search, you'll see results from friends listed above other search results.
Folks seem to be pretty happy with LimeWire 5, and we are too. Keep in mind this is still a beta, so there are still a few lingering bugs and other issues.
For those that use LimeWire's open source code... As part of writing LimeWire 5, we took the opportunity to make the code even easier for aspiring developers to use. There's now an easy-to-use "core-api" component. You can use the "core-glue" component as LimeWire's implementation of core-api, or you can write your own if you'd like to test things out yourself. The tutorials at http://wiki.limewire.org/index.php?title=Using_the_Core will be updated soon to make use of the new API.
Thanks!
The LimeWire Team

Hey Sam
for PPC OS 10.4 (Tiger) users, will 4.18.8 be made available on the download out-of-date installers page? I'm assuming LW 5 will not be ported to PPC OS X or for others who must use Java 1.5.
Thanks--sorry that I won't be part of the testing.

Yup, we're gonna redo that page a bit & make it available before 5 is the production version. Sorry not to have you testing LimeWire 5... I wish Apple would release Java 6 for all platforms. :/

how will the updates work? will i have to redownload Limewire when the final Limewire 5 is released or will i be notified to update or will it update itself for me?
i have been trying it for just a few days now and so far it works great exept the pesky notice i get at the opening about saving to an opptional folder (namely another drive) is there a way to kep that from popping up every time i open limewire?
i do like single click downloads but i liked the subwindow that came up when you were downloading a file when i was using 4.18
and is there an opptional way to change the look and color maybe?
Sam

LimeWire will let you know when a new version is available, but it won't automatically install the update for you.
What notice are you talking about that you see at the beginning? What exactly does it say?
Also, what subwindow in 4.18 are you talking about? What did that say?
There's no option right now to change the look & color. That may arrive in future versions.

Does it take long to receive an update notification? I know that 5.05 is out, but I haven't received a notification within LW. Thanks for correcting the bug that I had!

Notifications aren't sent out immediately. We manually trigger them when we feel there's enough changes that a significant number of folks should test it, or if we are confident in the release and know another one isn't coming soon. We're going to try and release a bunch of newer betas this week, and probably won't notify about each one. I'd hate to be caught in a situation where folks get annoyed with seeing too many updates and stop updating.

Alright cool, glad to hear that you're planning on releasing more beta updates this week! Will inform you if i notice any bugs :D
The only thing I'm waiting for as of now is the ability to be able to press enter on a song, which doesn't work yet.

What happened to being able to view the file size? Seeing that helped me not to download "bad" files....
Sam

You should still see the file size listed for all files that don't have a "length" that can be listed instead. If the length is listed, do you still need to see file size (and why)?
(FWIW, you can always see it in the classic view, but we'd like to make sure the list view fits needs too.)

If the length is listed, do you still need to see file size (and why)?
I think that should be apparent. In some cases I do not want to download a file if it is over a certain length. Lets saying I look up a music video, the leangth might be fine but it is 16MB over the regular size for that encoding and resolution. 1. Thats a suspicious file, 2. I might see two files nearly identtical that have the same resolution but might be a smaller file size because of a diffrent encoding. There are quite a few reasons. and really I dont see how it was determined that that should have been removed, it was one of the best ways I could tell fake files too. I will prob not use classic mode, but I am telling you now me and a few other guys I told to check out your beta have said the same thing: "My only complaint is I can't see that."

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Out of curiosity, though, why don't you want to use the classic mode? (I personally like the list mode better too, but is good to hear reasons from lots of people.)

I just like it, I can't really explain it. This was my only complaint about it. Anyway you guys are doing a helluva job and like I said I cannot wait to see the pro version.

My thought on this is that i like it how it is. I personally removed many categories that were being shown in the library so that it looked more clean and organized. Now that there is a better filter in LW, it reduces literally the majority of spam that is shown. The typical TOP50, CD Quality, MTV, etc. were the only ones that i encountered. If i notice another file as spam, i simply choose to Mark as Spam.
I always keep my AV running anyways so that if anything were to happen, I'm set! It would be sweet if a simple virus scanner was implemented into LW, however this would work. I have no problems with viruses myself, it's the people that download any file that worry me. :(

Is there a change log between beta versions? The last one posted is for the Alpha.

I'm surprised! Right when i opened up LimeWire, minutes after i loaded it up, it told me there is a new update :D
Dang, i was really hoping that the "enter" bug when playing songs would be fixed.

we're still working on keyboard accessibility but thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure that gets in and update the change log when it is (http://wiki.limewire.org/index.php?title=Changelog)

I had corrected some of my files information ,and when I closed Limewire it went back to the original info. Is this a bug or do I have to save the changes and if so how?
Thank You

More description is needed. Show us step by step exactly what you tried to change and how you did it.
Right now we don't have a clue which information you are talking about or what you mean by your files.

In my library on an audio file I right clicked then selected view file. Then I changed the details and clicked ok. The files details were then changed to the way I wanted them, but then I closed limewire. The next time I opened limewire the file details reverted to the original information as If I had never changed it. As a side note I am running Mac OS 10.5.6 (Leopard).
Thank You

If I'm not mistaking, this feature doesn't work yet. I actually tried doing it myself, but i ran into a bug error, which i then sent out the bug report. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a small question reguarding Limewire 5 Beta....Now I have Limewire Pro 4.18.8. I would like to try the beta one but I don't know if the page I went to on Limewire is the one for Limewire 5 Beta Pro or not. Is there a Limewire 5 Beta Pro???

When will Limewire 5 Beta be avalible to actually download as a stable version? Avalible as Limewire 5 Pro???

There is only a limewire 5 basic beta, sorry.

Then at the top of the page of Limewire it says...Download LimeWire Beta 5.0.7. Then it says Pro...then basic. Then it says......Get PRO special onetime download for $13.95
No tech support, no updates
That's misleading because I took it that there's a LimeWire Beta 5.0.7 Pro and basic. Here is the link:
