Strange things are happening! After downloading LimeWire beta and after double clicking on the .dmg file all seems well. LW installs as it should, but when I click on the greyed-out LW icon a message appears telling me I cannot open LW in the 'Classic environment'. But I'm not using Mac Classic. I am using an Intel machine running 10.5.6. Can somebody out there help me out, please? (By the way, there is no such problem running LW 4.18.8)

Not sure on this one. Any Mac enthusiasts out there have any ideas?

Where exactly is the greyed out Limewire icon? Is it in the Limewire Folder in applications and what other items are in there? Can you control click on it and see get info and tell us what it says..particularly where it says name and extension. I'm guessing a bit here .. I have an older Mac and can not use Limewire 5 :(

Hi Sam and Only A Hobo,
Thanks for your responses to my query.
I shall include an attachment to this message so you can see for yourselves the error message that appears when I click on the LW icon.
Incidentally, the previous beta of LW misbehaved in exactly the same way!
I have read elsewhere in the forum that a few users of LW have had problems (but not like the one I am having) due to certain versions of Java. However, the installations of Java on my Intel iMac are all okay, and the system itself is bang up to date with Apple Software installations.
Oh well, I guess I better reinstall version 4.18.8 of LW until you can come to my rescue with this beta problem!

(PS: You'll also notice that the 'Get Info' attachment reveals the LW file size as zero! Odd because the LW installation completes as a 'success'!)

I have now found out what the problem was regarding the above. On my hard drive were 'remnants' of the stable 4.18 version of LimeWire. Deleting these files has made LW beta work correctly.
Thanks for your time in helping me solve this mystery!

I'm glad you have solved it. This is such a major upgrade that I can imagine some conflicts can occur with older Limewire versions, although I can not for the fife of me work out how classic came into the equation since afaik Leopard does not support classic in any case. I noticed also, as you did, that the Limewire.app icon showed a size of zero.

Perhaps there should be a recommendation that the old preference/appdata folder should be deleted prior to installation or that the new installation should automatically overwrite it, but hopefully this is an isolated incident and that will not be necessary .. Do you happen to know exactly which file(s) you removed to fix the problem?

Hello again!
What I had not deleted from 4.18 prior to installing beta5 was 'LimeWire At Login.app'. I thought I had got rid of that as I dragged the LimeWire.app icon into AppZapper, which should have sorted that out. However, it didn't. It was left behind, for some strange reason. My fault, really, for not noticing!
But I am glad LW is working again. I shall give it a good test run later this evening!
Thanks for your time.
(By the way....milk,no sugar!)

Here is my suggestion to all of you, it has worked for my for quite a few years now:

When upgrading limewire for some reason its like updating your Graphics Card drivers. Remove all aspects of the previous limewire by uninstalling it, run a reg cleaner, and unassociated file sweeper, then physically go into your storage local (diffrent for Mac and Windows) and after taking out all your saved files delete all folders related, empty recycle bin (or trash for mac users). Then install the new version of limewire, I know it seems like a pain but honestly I have done it this way everytime since the upgrade for LW series to LW 2 and I have never had the same experiences most have with the bugs. And trust me when I say other than that I really dont do anything special.

I hate to bring back a somewhat "dead" post, but I just downloaded 5.0.11 today and am running into this problem. I am positive that all older versions are gone from the system. Spotlight shows nothing when I search for "limewire" or even just "lime" other then the definition. I am unable to find anything left over from it manually by searching through countless folders. What is odd is that the Alpha and the update to the next version worked fine. And I am able to reinstall 4.18.8 and it runs fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I do not to use spotlight ... It does not show up everything unless you choose "show all (xxx)|" and possibly not even then ... but I am on Tiger (10.4.11) ...

I suspect you may have missed the Limewire preference folder which shows up in Finder under "other" ... In any case it is at Your name > library > Preferences > Limewire and should always be deleted during a clean install

There may also be an Install Limewire.pkg at HD > library > Receipts which spotlight failed to show me, and sometimes this needs to be removed on updating.

Please take care that there are no saved files in Your Name > Limewire > saved, shared or Store if you plan to delete that folder, but deleting that should not be necessary ....;

I hope this helps :)

I missed the Install Limewire.pkg in the Receipts folder, everything else was gone.

So after finding that I restarted and proceeded to download 5.0.11 again, went through the install with some slight differences this time which made it seem like it would work. I noticed before it was saying that it would only require 1.7MB of HD space, which I found sort of odd because it was so small. This time however it gave me the option to pick my HDD/Partition and said it would take 7.7MB of space. The install went smooth but I still get the "... Classic environment is no longer supported." error.

I'm more stumped then I use to get in any Windows issues before I switched to Mac.

Hmm this is odd and as far as i can make out the same situation as the thread starter ..... he had to delete LimeWire At Login.app manually .... it is in the Limewire folder in Applications. Only difference is the exact version of Limewire.

I can only suggest a total uninstall ... again ... Application folder w/contents .... Preference folder w/contents ... receipt ..... and under the circumstances the shared/save/incomplete/store folders together with the: your name > frostwire folder after emptying them. empty the trash ...

(There is a great App called Trash It which will delete all traces of an application but I'm not sure it works in Leopard. I see another called Trash It Fast which looks good but i've no experience with it. This might be helpful)

Repair permissions,

Then reboot, re-download and try again

If still no luck please open the Mac Console (Applications > Utilities > clear it and try to open Limewire ..... if any log results please paste it here.. It might turn out to be a bug and that would help.

Thanks for all the help and patience with this Only A Hobo, but still not getting anywhere with 5.0.11.

I found Trash It! for Leopard, reinstalled the older version, used AppZapper to get ride of it. Went through all the same folders and deleted anything that was left behind. Used Trash It! to empty the trash can after I double checked everything. I then proceeded to reboot after taking care of permissions.

Once I rebooted I downloaded 5.0.11 again, installation went smooth and I then tried to open it with the Console open and there were no log results.

I did notice though, that when I select Get Info on the LimeWire.app file itself that the file size is Zero KB. And this makes me wonder if it is showing this because it is registering as an Application (Classic) or that maybe somehow I am getting a corrupt file each time I download it? The download almost every time for 5.0.11 has been near instant.

I may just wait this out till another version comes out and see if that works.

I am wondering which browser you are using to download ... and if you could try a different one. I have just downloaded it with safari and opera .. and all seemed well but I am using os x 10.4.11. on an old ppc mac so I can not actually run Limewire 5.0.11 but it seems to have installed fine ... the dmg file size was 8.2.MB (8,596,262 bytes) and the installed Limewire App 47.1MB but that may differ for you ..

This was with the basic version ... I do not have a pro account.
