View Full Version : Recent problem - upload speed

I have no problems downloading files, but in the spirit of sharing, I've noticed the upload speed has issues. Usually the maximum slots are filled and the upload speed is around 70.

Recently fewer slots are in use and the speed continuously rises and falls from 15 to 0. Despite changing the settings to "high" or "unlimited," I still see the same problem occurring.

I don't think it's fair to take and not give. But I'm not sure what to do.

Is this with the beta, or 4.x?

Also who is your internet provider? You might be a victim or "shapeing" which means your ISP might be blocking uploading. This happens when they think you are using a filesharing or you are using too much bandwith. But this sneaky thing is only done by very few companies.

I bought the 4.18 version.

My service provider is Canadian -- Telus. I have no problem uploading large files through internet storage systems.

robertcc--google "Sandvine" to find out more. Some Canadian providers have been using/are using Sandvine or other such systems that interfere with gnutella uploads.

I had to get the head of my ISP's help desk to deal with a similar problem (the regular helpers were unaware that some uploads were being throttled). I still see downloads from some Canadian ISPs being affected. Ask your ISP if uploads to the gnutella network are throttled or if they use Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) traffic shaping policies.

To test, watch your uploads. They start with a high rate, then stop, then start again a while later. Another way to test is to get a friend from an unfiltered ISP to connect to you directly, and report their findings. The best way is to sign up for a trial with an alternate ISP, and use those upload test results to discuss the situation with your preferred ISP.

Telus is good. They are one of the few ISPs that are actually a real network company
that owns and upgrades their infrastructure regularly, and so have no need for
cheaping out by manipulating traffic in an underhanded manner.

Reduce your slots to less than 10 and disable ultrapeer capability and your uploads
may improve a bit. Windows bogs down a bit when a lot of connections are open.

Does this mean in order to speed up down loads I need to get rid of AOL or is there another solution.

This was done already. My slots were set to "6." And disable ultrapeer was checked. I'm on Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Is anything else in your house using the internet connection?

getting people with slower internet or you have a real technical problem with your internet
connection's reliability. Try the speed (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest) and tweak (http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks) tests at Broadband reports.
