Within 15-20 minutes of using LW 5.3.2, immediately saw some repeat upload listings. And obviously the same person with each. That's 4 listings for one. 2 for the other, and by the looks of the uploading status, suspect it might have been about to stop which would have created a 3rd listing at resumption of uploading that file. Oh .. and the 09.jpg looks as though it had not completed either .. so would have resulted in a 5th listing for that one. This was only over the period mentioned. Imagine a session lasting several days. The upload window would be a mess to try to comprehend how uploads behaved. Not to mention the extra lag building up with Java on OSX. (I deleted some uploads from the image to keep the image smallish. It was 3 scrolls/clicks from top to bottom of upload window.)
Oh .. and if you look at the video file uploading, the listing above it says Done Uploading. That does not tell us much. Did they complete it? No or so it appears, they are still uploading it in a different listing. Why no status telling us what really happened? So Done Uploading at present could mean literally anything. No guarantees they actually completed the upload. LW-5.3-upload-repeats.gif Last edited by Lord of the Rings; September 4th, 2009 at 07:09 AM. |

On the topic of Uploads:
* When set to Broadband, the highest upload limit I can offer is about 43 KB/s. I'd like the option to drop it just below my upload ability or any variation between. 43 KB/s is very low level broadband upload ability. Don't forget there are lots of cable and high-end broadband users out there, and this speed means very little to them if say they wished to cut their upload speed by 20-50 % etc. * LW 5 does not have ability to limit uploads per person (unlike LW 4). Thus, one person can 'hog' all the upload slots. * Also, they may 'push' others off the upload list off by stealing all the upload bandwidth. Some p2p clients have ability to set upload speed per person or/& per file. This would be a highly beneficial tool. * Unlike LW 4 which showed upload speeds at bottom corner of window to the right of the download speed (number of uploads & speed), LW 5 only tells you of uploads in the upload window, and does not tell you the overall upload speed, and not how many are active at that time. * At present, I/we need to scroll up & down the upload window searching for active uploads. If it's a long session, that means a lot of scrolling. There should be a method of arranging uploads. LW 4, due to its use of columns, gave ability to arrange uploads via any of those columns; ie: status, upload Speed, Time, Filename, Host, vendor/version, file size, Progress, Chat, etc. I tended to change view option frequently. LW 4's upload window would also give a summary at top of its window. Oh .. and missing Extended Tooltips for uploads also from LW 5. * Perhaps like some p2p clients, you could consider a basic view & an advanced view for users who wish more information & the ability for them to choose which extra information to show. This advanced/basic view could be chosen in Options/Preferences. (Or even basic/intermediate/advanced.) Last edited by Lord of the Rings; September 4th, 2009 at 07:16 AM. |

Ok so it looks like the multiple entries are not fixed then. I'm afraid this will have to wait till 5.4.
LOTR, As I mentioned before uploads will look more like the current download table. It will be sortable and the rows won't be so big and hopefully it will be easier to see all the relevant information. There's also talk of putting it in a tab in the download tray, so you'll be able to see it from any screen. In regards to the Done Uploading, as I said before there's no way of knowing if a download is done/cancelled/stalled/etc.. and there never has been. I don't agree with how we hide all the other information such as bytes uploaded when that state is reached but all we know is the person stopped requesting chunks of the file, we have no way of knowing why they stopped. |

also I just checked, the fix for the multiple uploads was never added. I tried to fix it in 5.1 but the patch was rejected. Someone else tried in 5.2 and I thought it was added but it was also rejected.

I'm not so sure the files even in my example are from multiple shares. Maybe the video, not sure. Definitely the images were original. A reasonably high percentage of my multiple thousands of shares are ones I've hosted, not downloaded. And of those I've downloaded, many are not super common; collector items (rare live performances, etc.)
Glad to hear work is now being done toward the upload window. And yes, the button to reach the upload window will be a relief. ![]() Unlike torrents that have a tracker that each client can report their progress through, does Gnutella allow reporting of download completion to the uploader's client? I think you hinted it is possible. With some torrent programs, you can actually see which pieces the other person has on a piece map graphic display. (and shows which parts are being uploaded or downloaded at that moment.) And for downloading, Phex for example can prioritize the less common pieces if you set it to. Phex also has a type of piece map display. BTW any word on the option of uploads per person being re-introduced? A number of people complained about loss of that ability at Gnutella forums over the year. Drives me crazy seeing a single person take up all my upload slots with no control over it. lol It's one thing if they are aiming at a particular collection of items, it's another when they are simply being greedy. (And in my experience, it's usually the greedy ones who do not share or deliberately share minimal.) |

The multiple uploads issue should finally be fixed in 5.4.1 release.
