Default Where to Install a New Skin

How To Install a Skin

Where to Install Your Skin

When downloading a skin via your browser, right click the link and "Save As". Save the file to one of the following folders:
  • On Windows:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator (or) yourusername\Application Data\Limewire\themes
  • On Vista:
    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire\themes
  • On Mac OSX:
    Macintosh HD\Users:yourusername\Library\Preferences\LimeWire \Themes
  • On Mac Classic:
    System Folder\Preferences\.limewire\themes
Also..

If you cant find your 'themes' folder, this is the easiest way to locate it as there are different instructions for some LimeWire versions and Operating Systems (so we'll keep it simple).

First you have to unhide your Files & Folders as M$ likes to keep interesting stuff secret

Go to Start > Search (this will open your search window)

Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Tick 'show hidden files & folders' & Uncheck: 'hide extensions for known file types'

Enter your search criteria using *.lwtp and choose your C: Drive... Hit Search.. This should now show the complete path where your skins are located.

If the file is a .zip file, you will need to change the extension from .zip to .lwtp by the following method which is supplied by 'bromber' - thanks for your contribution.

Quote:
To load files into Lime wire Go to Skins webpage and right click link choose save as when you get the window up to save choose the correct path for the themes folder then change the Save as Type box to All Files then in the File Name box add to the end of file .lwtp then click save. go into Lime Wire and choose view ---> AplySkin--->refresh. Now your skin should be in there. (This method still applies when you click one of the skins on this forum)

When your skin is installed... in LimeWire... go to View > Apply Skins > Refresh Skins. Then you should see your skin

Default Download location in Windows XP for skins

Hi Just want to point out the info given in this sticky wont work for Windows XP - at least I think it's only XP, I suspect it may affect other 2000/NT based verisons too.

Once you have made all files viewable via Folder Options on the menu bar - you need to locate the following folder:

(drive):\Documents and settings\profile (user) name\Application Data\Limewire\themes

where (drive) is the install drive where you installed Windows
& profile (user) name is the name of your login profile used when you login into Windows or if you dont have to login (naughty), the name given when you first installed Windows on your computer.

So, you keep the file zipped and change it to, for instance... ocean_theme.lwtp
That seems a bit strange. Then I would still have a zipped file with a different name.
Please clarify.
Or better yet, could someone do a complete explanation of how to do this without using generalizations like "the folder" and "the file"? EXPLAIN WHAT FOLDER and EXPLAIN WHAT FILE. I'm a computer engineer, and even I find it to be too complicated to do it.
All the instructions around here are vague. And the final folder has been diverted to a different location as well, which I didn't know until today.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ALL THESE PEOPLE WITH A PROPER, NON-VAGUE TUTORIAL!
The tutorial above is just as vague as all the rest. Here's the blue part:
If the file is a .zip file, change the extension from .zip to .lwtp by renaming the file as you would normally.
My question: If WHAT file is a .zip file? Please be more concise.

My question: If WHAT file is a .zip file? Please be more concise.

this forum doesn't consist of computer engineers like you... and if you are one, shouldn't you be smarter than all the rest of us that uses "vauge" explanations... what is the purpose of your computer engineering degree if you can't even figure out how to change the file name from .zip to .lwtp? is it difficult for you to spell it out? the fact of the matter is that this forum is used by ordinary people too... i'm just a freshman in college... i don't know any special way of explaining where to place your files... at least our "vague" explanations can help someone that has the common sense to decipher and understand these "vague" instructions... so, i don't appreciate how you are putting down these explanations... if you're so smart, figure it out yourself...

but, since i enjoy trying to help others, i'll try to explain what i did in my own case... it won't be the same case for everyone... so don't complain if you can't understand! that's your own problem!

1. after completing the folder that contained my customized theme, i opened up the WinZip program. then, i opened up my customized theme folder, highlighted (or selected) all of the contents in the folder, and dragged and then dropped the contents on top of the WinZip program window. a box will immediately open asking you to name the file. simply put the ending .lwtp to the name. below is a link to a picture so that you get a better visual.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ey8a8y/001.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ey8a8y/002.jpg

2. once the file was changed to .lwtp, i pressed the "Add" button. WinZip should create the .lwtp to wherever you saved your customized theme folder. for example, i had saved my customized theme folder to my Desktop and the .lwtp version appeared on my Desktop as well. close the WinZip program.

3. for my case, i have windows vista. limewire places the original themes in this location:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire\themes

USERNAME is whatever you made your name on your computer. if you took a look at the pictures above, obviously my computer name is Blair. i opened up the "Computer" folder. it doesn't matter which folder you open, just as long as it is for the computer. here's a picture of what i mean.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ey8a8y/003.jpg

input the link above into the "address bar" i suppose i can say and press enter. this will reveal where all the other themes for limewire are located. i simply dragged and dropped the .lwtp file i made into this window.

4. finally, i opened up my limewire, clicked on "View" then to "Apply Skins" and then to my customized theme name. and there you have it! hopefully THIS isn't vague...
