Default Can't Connect? Try Gnutella.net file here

Some people have improved their bad connection by replacing the gnutella.net file with a fresh one. Do make sure that Limewire is fully closed before you replace it.

(If you are using Limewire 5.x you should only need to delete your old gnutella.net file. Adding a fresh one should not be necessary. See also CONNECTION PROBLEMS IN LIMEWIRE 5 ).

Just click (Do not right click) on attatched file: "gnutella.net" just below, And save (don't open) the file either to somewhere you can find it like your desk top... or, only if you know where exactly to save it to, to that location. You need to register as a member of the forums to do this.

See below for where the file needs to be placed.

EDIT Gnutella.net file attached replaced with fresh one 20 June 2009
EDIT Added alternate download location, file updated on 20 June 2009

Alternate download location for gnutella.net
Attached Files
File Type: net gnutella.net (18.9 KB, 1194 views)

In XP: enable viewing of hidden and system files go to the Tools
menu in Windows Explorer, then Folder Options, and in the View tab set it to show hidden files and folders and system files.
Once you've changed those setting you can find the
folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\LimeWire". It Might alternatively be at C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\.limewire with certain LW versions in certain SPs but use the first location if there is a choice.

In Windows Vista to enable viewing of hidden files in any windows folder click tools > folder options at the top. click on that and then view then show hidden files and folders. it is at C:\Users\name you use to login\AppData\Roaming\Limewire It MIGHT also be at C:\users\myname\.limewire but the first location seems to be the one to use if there is a choice.
The Vista Instructions have casused a few problems for users and the following method posted by hurricanehm1 has proved very helpful:

This does work although it took me a bit to find the folder.

For anyone with windows vista here it is step by step. since vista seems to have everything placed diferently from what we were used to in xp

1. start - click on computer
2. in left hand sidefolders column click on your user name.
3. find apps data - should be at the top of this list click on it
4. you should have a folder called roaming. click on it.
5. look for the limewire folder - click on it.
6. now look and see if there is a folder called Gnutella.net - if so right click and delete it to recylce bin but do not delete from recyle bin yet. and DO not close this list yet either. If not prceed to next step.

7. Now find the file you saved and right click it and drag it to the place where the file was you deleted and select copy here.

8. now close the folders window and try opening your limewire again - you may have to click on file at top and then connect to start your connection, which should instantly connect to 5 full bars.

9 if this was sucessful - now you may delete the file you put in your recycle bin permanently.

happy listening .
Another way to show hidden folders is to go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > Click on "View" tab > Click "Show Hidden Files and Folders

In Mac OS X it is at HD>Users>your name>library>preferences>Limewire

----------- Please Note -----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you find there is no Gnutella.net file in the appdata or preference folder, it doesn't matter. Just put the new file in there anyway. It just means that Limewire did not actually create the file itself, which sometimes happens.

But,Note that there are likely to be at least three folders called Limewire. The one you want is the one of the locations above. It will contain several files including createtimes.cache, fileurns.cache, limewire.props and many others. gnutella.net may be missing.

You do not want the folder that contains folders called saved, store purchased, incomplete and shared. Neither do you want the one that contains the Limewire, copying and source files. Remember .. the folder you want is in a great many cases hidden.

Thanks Kath. I had a HD crash and did a new install, after which Limewire wouldn't connect until I used your file. I'm turbo-charged again now.

What are the symptoms, and provide full info on your system, firewall, and internet
connection, including modem, router modem numbers and version numbers of
everything else involved, like the operating syatem and LimeWire versions.

Default Thank You

Thank you so much for this. I have been without my beloved Limewire for almost 2 weeks now, giving up thinking it was BT blocking me.
Then I was reading another post and someone suggested I try this file. I did and my Limewire is back turbo charged.
Thanks again.
Denise xx

I've removed my old Limewire install, deleted the old Limewire folders and then installed the latest 4.17.4 beta version. I also replaced the gnutella.net file but I still get the "You are currently connecting to the network" and can't do a darn thing. Very frustrating to say the least.
